Chinese guardian lions are traditional depictions in architectural ornament. They are often depicted in pairs. Their action represents a balanced force and is meant to protect the building from evil spirits. In other cultures, these lions also manifest the balancing forces of yin and yang. The open mouth signifies the utterance of the sacred word “om”, the primordial sound from which the entire universe arose.
